When I connect to my K4 with TCP, frequency control works well but PTT does not work at all unless I use omnirig for PTT. For WSJT-X I use TCP and CAT for PTT with no problems.
Joe, e-mail me your VarAC_cat_commands file as an attachment - plain text - not zipped (nd4x@hotmail.com) and then reboot. I had that same error also, and a reboot cleared it. I will look at your commands file while you are rebooting.
Thanks that helps. I downloaded the updated rig control file and it has the K4 commands correct as you show. I can control with the rig with a Com port but not TCP.
Joe - Did you get it working. I found with mine, the commands for the K4 are incorrect in the Elecraft selection of the VarAC_cat_commands file. I created a new entry for [Elecraft K4] and modified the following three commands. All is fine now using TCP and PPT.
Comm Port connection and TCP connection are 2 different animals. As for TCP with name that is not a valid address, you will need to use the IP address of the radio.
I am using both Thetis and Flex via IP to VarAC and it works very reliably. is it possible your PC's Firewall is blocking some of this?
Understand. Definintely not a firewall issue. I am trying to use as few com ports as I can.
Actually the name will translate to a vallid address per mDNS. See ping below. Unfortunately some software like N1MM and apparently VarAC still require a hard coded ip. Other like WSJTX, DXLog.net HamLib and many others follow the standard.
cant vouch for the K4 and how well it's TCP/IP CAT works. I use a Flex and an Anan daily with VarAC and they all use TCP/IP CAT (same Kenwood protocol as the K4 though).
Tried Anan Thetis and Smart SDR (Flex) did not work at all.
Did some more testing and found that TCP to K4 with IP address only works some of the time. If I use K4 with a comm port it works with no trouble. If I use TCP with a host name "K4-SN01280" which is how I do it in WSJT-X I get the following error.
Omnirig is not working any more though it works fine in Log4OM and WSJTX. I get the folllowing error.
Some screenshots would go a long way in helping. I use TCP/IP CAT and PTT on both my Flex and Anan and they both work fine and as you know it is the same protocol as the K4 (I am even using the same port). Let's see your PTT settings like this, as well as what the settings in your CAT ini file.
Here is what I get using the same settings except for K4 address.

Here is a summary.
For PTT CAT and Rig control, for the fun of it, without changing any other settings, set the Rig type to ANAN Thetis and Flex and test.
Screen shots of working WSJT-X config and VARAC PTT working with Omnirig but not working with Elecraft
This works in WSJT-X for frequency change and PTT
This works for VarAC frequency control but not PTT
This works for VarAC frequency control and PTT but obviously requires Omnirig.
Thanks.
