Using OmniRig, I can dial my radio to any frequency and VarAC follows. From there, using QSY or selecting a slot, marks whatever I had dialed as the CF and moves off the appropriate amount for the selected slot. Clicking the CF return button returns to the originally dialed frequency. Just what I would expect
I've had reports of that not working when using the internal VarAC CAT capability. It seems like VarAC does not want to leave the standard calling frequencies. This has been reported across several different manufacturers of radios.
Has anyone else experienced that behavior?
VarAC works with direct CAT as well as omnirig and FLrig.
With direct can many forget that they can not share a COM PORT with multiple applications unless they are using a virtual com port emulator like VSPE.
Omnirig and FLrig are "mediators" that can aggregate multiple rigs into a single COM Port.
But many fails to understand how COM port works and there for does not manage to configure VarAC to connect the COM port as it is already occupied by WSJTX/OmniRig/HRD/Log4OM etc...
If you can tell us what rig you are using I can make sure with other hams that it works ok.

It wasn't an issue I had so I don't really know the details of the rig, software versions, etc. I just wanted to check whether there were inherent restrictions on what frequencies can be selected. I've had the people reporting the issue check whether they were properly configured to poll changes in the rig frequency, which I suspect might be the problem.
Nope, but you have left us with little info to go on. Let's start with "what rig"?
