should this mode be ON or OFF in Vara itself, the monitor mode. It seems that I only see beacons, CQ's when it is OFF, is that normal?
If it is normal, why does it need to be off? What is causing beacons / CQ's not to be displayed if it is ON?

I have the same issue. I have the second VARA modem set for Monitor ON. I hear lots of data. However no data is displayed on the VARA monitor.

On your primary VARA HF instance it must be Off. If you choose to run a Monitor Instance then that instance must have Monitor On
