Shortening VMAILS

I read a comment somewhere in the Forum, that Irad is considering shortening the amount of text to be entered in a VMAIL.

While I can understand the need to do so on the calling QRG, I wonder if there might be a different way to reduce the load on the QRG.

How about compressing the message, and sending it that way (just like when a picture or file is sent)?

How about limiting VMAIL size JUST on the calling QRG, but allowing the current 500 character messages on other frequencies?

A non-consistent experiance will be hard for people to understand... Next version will take the VMail size to 300 characters. I do this partially to reduce stress on the CF until I implement a new balancing mechanism (currently in design) but also because I want VMails to be a natural extension of the chatting experiance (more like an async type of chatting)... So I am after the "twitter-like" experiance where you use less words that are more meanigdul. forcing you into a box makes you more effecient in your emmission :)

Bill, there is a counter already displayed at the bottom of the text box. It's in very small text at the bottom.

Well, I should have noticed that. I still would like to be able to paste in 400 characters (400/350) and edit it down to 350 for transmission. We are using a 40 hour NWS weather forecasts in our exercises and sometimes it fits and sometimes it doesn't. Problem is the most important part of the forecast may be towards the tail end. Allowing some extra stuff that needs to be edited out would be a nice feature.

Here are my lessons learned in our ongoing exercise on this subject:

- Parking messages for relay can only be done by drafting the message when prompted to do so, after the connection has been made. The relay station must be in 'AWAY' status for this scenario to play out.

- There is a 350 character limit for VMail. There is a counter in lower left of the message form. Recommend drafting the message on the SEND VMAIL form before your connection and edit down to 350 characters. When done editing, copy the text, make your connection to the relay station, and then paste your text into the message form when prompted with the option to send VMail..
