VMAIL-Relays/Sends on CALL-QRG or: Automatic-QSY when away possible?

What about an automatic QSY, even at "away" stations (at least within the current band) when vmails are waiting and have to be exchanged automatically? Maybe I´m not the only one who has this behaviour: Recently I worked daily with VarAC and I had repeadedly that problem: * I connected a station which I had vmails for * in case when the connection wasn´t really good [(1) 18 bps] first of all the "away"-message and reoprts were exchanged - the the vmail was started to transfer automatically. * All happened of course on the call-QRG and because of the slow connection this all took a lot of time. Rather often so long, that the vmail couldn´d be transferred completely or I didn´t receive the confirmation of the vmail received fine. In most cases the connection broke up because it was disc. automatically due to the long time on the call-qrg. The result is: the mail will be sent again, usually again on the call-QRG another time. Are there any solutions planned for that? I stay tuned ;-)

Having your RIG QSY and transmit while you not in control of it is not something I want to do at the moment. You will have to reconnect at better condition to retrieve your vmail. I am going to shorten the VMAL length anyhow as I believe messages should be shorter and more efficient. it is not for long manifests. 73s

In my opinion the length is not the problem. Just assume that more users (the user-figure increases daily) want to uses the "relay-technique" and there e.g. are 3 mails to transfer. It´s not the length in my eyes - it´s the way how it is handled. I really don´t have an idea how it could be better. Your suggestion mentioned above works but it increases traffic on the calling QRG. 73 de Lenz, DL8RDL

I understand your concern. However, when we talk here about "QSY", it is just a small incremental change in frequency aimed at freeing the calling channel. Strictly, it is a QSY, but given the small delta-f it borders on a fine-tuning of the frequency of operation. I don't try to play with words here. If we connect to an "AWAY" station, there is a real problem when we are forced to use the calling channel for the purpose of leaving a message in the mailbox. It is for many of us not practical to wait for times of better propagation and a resulting faster link.

Maybe introducing an "AWAY" QSY is not such a risky thing. It can be made an operators choice (AWAY QSY on/off). Just a thought. 73 from downunder
